Brandee Younger ā Brand New Life (Jazz) [Listen]
Hailing from New York with classical training, Brandee Younger emerges as a bright talent in the jazz harp scene. Her recently released seventh album, Brand New Life, is a genuine musical treat. The album features five Dorothy Ashby compositions, two originals, and other tracks. Although it includes contributions from 9th Wonder and Pete Rock on drum programming and R&B singer Meshell Ndegeocello, the album only showcases danceable R&B rhythms as one might anticipate. Instead, under the masterful production of modern jazz virtuoso drummer Makaya McCraven, Brand New Life serves as an exceptional and chic contemporary music offering.
Biako ā Feelings Happen (R&B) [Listen]
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, producer, and jack of all trades, Biako finally released his debut album with Feelings Happen. With this release, he combines the elements of R&B by fusing them with electronic, psych-soul, and pop. At fourteen songs, he keeps things short and sweet with the help of Baby Rose, Peyton, Jean Deaux, Van Hunt, Mamii, and Leven Kali.
Meyhem Lauren, Madlib & DJ Muggs ā Champagne for Breakfast (Hip-Hop) [Listen]
Following the universally praised Daringer-crafted Black Vladimir, Meyhem Lauren sustains his stride by joining Muggs and enlisting Madlib, allowing both West Coast veterans to produce his sixth record, Champagne for Breakfast. Muggs and Madlib harmoniously embody the Yin and Yang of production, reminiscent of Kanye West and Pharrell's collaboration on Pusha T's previous album, It's Almost Dry. Meyhem masterfully delivers gangsta rap that seamlessly complements the distinct production styles of both West Coast beat maestros.
Winny ā WINNY (R&B) [Listen]
Emerging Nigerian R&B/Soul artist Winny establishes herself as a rising star by launching her eponymous debut EP, WINNY, now available via The Orchard. Winny, the primary composer of this 7-track endeavor, collaborates with other notable up-and-coming Nigerian producers such as Damie, Jonn P, WodeMagic, and Waji, culminating in a stimulating fusion of dancehall, pop, and R&B.
Nym Lo & Statik Selektah ā From the Horseās Mouth (Hip-Hop) [Listen]
Nym Lo emerges as the harbinger of classic, reminiscent hip-hop that fans universally cherish. Originating from Harlem, New York, this up-and-coming luminary takes pride in his lyrical prowess and his knack for seamlessly adapting to any rhythm, inspiring listeners worldwide to believe in transforming their aspirations into tangible realities. Nym Lo now introduces his latest creation, From the Horse's Mouth, masterfully produced by the renowned Statik Selektah. Leading the charge for this 10-track collection are singles I Love the Game featuring Dave East, Exuma Island, and A Kid From the Town with Curren$y.
Devon Gilfillian ā Love You Anyway (R&B) [Listen]
Indeed, Devon Gilfillian's Love You Anyway adheres to this heritage, warranting its unique recognition. The incredibly gifted singer-songwriter, who unveiled his second full-length album recently, demonstrates a clear dedication to that epoch of R&B and soul. This passion is evident in his passionate, masterful vocal delivery and his affinity for intricate production, rhythm-driven compositions, and bass lines that take center stage over guitars.
Fly Anakin & Foisey ā Skinemaxxx (Side A) [Hip-Hop] {Listen}
Underground artist Fly Anakin from Richmond unveiled his 2022 record, Frank, which marked a significant milestone in his fruitful career, not merely because it's deemed his "debut album." Furthermore, he envisions even grander aspirations for its successor, Skinemaxxx. This dual-segmented album unveiled its initial part last week, featuring an exclusive collaboration with producer Foisey and guest appearances from Pink Siifu and Big Kahuna OG. It perpetuates Anakin's long-established trajectory of luxurious, lyrical compositions. While not conforming to the pop-rap genre, it exudes a distinctive warmth and allure.
LaTocha ā The Invitation: A Conversation with God (Gospel) [Listen]
After anticipation, Xscape's LaTocha unveiled her inaugural solo album, The Invitation: A Conversation with God. She promoted the gospel album on SWV & Xscape: The Queen of R&B, a six-part miniseries featured within Bravo's Sunday programming. LaTocha's Made Girl Music imprint, in collaboration with Motown Gospel/Capitol CMG, launched The Invitation: A Conversation with God. The partnership was declared earlier in the year.
