The Best Jazz Vocalist of the Present Era is Right Here!
Discover mind-blowing jazz with Samara Joy's Spotify singles.
Samara Joy is now on cloud nine. The 23-year-old has been recognized as one of the best jazz vocalists of the present, earning her nominations for Best New Artist and Jazz Vocal Album at the GRAMMYs Awards. With the awards show happening tonight, Samara is celebrating with a new Spotify Singles series released last Monday. She gives an updated rendition of Guess Who I Saw Today and a creative take on Adele's multi-platinum hit Someone Like You as her contribution backed by an organist, Shedrick Mitchell.
Although Nancy Wilson's rendition from her 1960 album Something Wonderful is arguably the most well-known, the song Guess Who I Saw Today had been a jazz staple since the 1950s. Samara gave this song new life when she recorded it for her GRAMMY-nominated album Linger Awhile. Her silky voice and the song's emotion are accompanied chiefly by the piano. At the very end, she throws a curveball by switching to a more lively pace that allows her to riff, run, and scat to bring the song to a satisfying close.
Their rendition of Someone Like You by Adele is fantastic. Her voice, reminiscent of Sarah Vaughn, digs into the words' anguish, and an organ elevates the whole thing to almost religious proportions. She gets several opportunities in the song, especially at the conclusion, to demonstrate the full force of her skills. During such parts, she offers us controlled wails and runs, each note and word ringing loud as a bell and resonating with the anguish the lyrics convey. Because of her unwavering confidence, Joy could face the song and provide a performance that is a study in steady build and unabashed emotional investment.
When the GRAMMYs are broadcast live on CBS tonight, you can bet that Samara Joy will be one of the artists we're pulling for. We are still determining what will happen once she performs at the event. We are at a turning point, and that goes for her entire fan base, which will only grow in size and breadth. Pure and simple, it is a blessing in Joy's eyes. Listen to her tracks in the Spotify Singles series, and we're confident you'll agree.
