EP Review: Duets (EP) by Eric Benét
As we await a 2016 self-titled follow-up, Eric Benét released a five-piece appetizer to hold us over for an album next year with Chanté Moore, Tamar Braxton, Ledisi, LaTocha, and Corinne Bailey Rae.
This period from 2016 to now in Eric Benét’s underappreciated career was characterized by a thoughtful hiatus, during which Benét appeared to be carefully selecting his next steps, culminating in an EP, which would lead to a full-length album next year, that showcases his ability to harmonize with some of the most respected voices in R&B. The Duets EP features collaborations with Tamar Braxton, Ledisi, Chanté Moore, LaTocha, and Corinne Bailey Rae, each bringing their unique flavor to the project, reflecting Benét’s vision of blending diverse vocal talents into a cohesive narrative of love, life, and musicality. Benét’s musical expedition leading up to his last effort has been one of strategic collaboration and artistic evolution since we last got material from him in eight years.
As the lead single of the EP, “Something We Can Make Love To,” featuring Tamar Braxton, creates an intimate atmosphere filled with sultriness. This song signifies Benét’s return after nearly ten years away from the industry while showcasing his unique talent for crafting deeply resonant music. Its strong performance demonstrates Benét’s ongoing charm and skill in producing R&B that harmonizes contemporary sounds with nostalgic elements.
Each song contributes uniquely to the overarching theme surrounding love and relationships. Chanté Moore shines on “So Distracted,” where her emotive delivery pairs beautifully with Benét’s vocals, fostering an intimate dialogue about reconciliation—a key element throughout this collection. Adding richness is Ledisi’s powerful presence on “Right Time.” This duet explores essential themes like patience within romantic connections while demonstrating both artists’ emotional capabilities—a clear indication of how well-suited they are for each other musically.
LaTocha brings infectious energy through “Work It Out,” effectively merging gospel roots into their R&B fusion. Their collaboration speaks about escape—not only physically but also emotionally—showcasing how adaptable he remains across genres without compromising authenticity. Corinne Bailey Rae joined forces for the EP’s best song, “Fly Away.” This masterful duet highlights why Rae is one of the most criminally underrated artists we have musically. Together, these collaborations on the Duets EP highlight not only Eric Benét’s roaming from 2016 to now but also his commitment to creating deeply personal and collaborative music, hoping we get a full-course meal to come next year.
