Chic's Debut Album 45 Years Later
This delightful album launched Chic into the mainstream; it wasn't nearly as rich as C'est Chic or Risqué, but it did help put the group on the map.
In 1977, when demos by Chic arrived at Atlantic Records, the band officially made its debut. Soulful vocalists like Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin, David Lasley, Robin Clark, Diva Gray, Norma Jean Wright, and even an unheralded Luther Vandross were asked to join Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards on their tunes. Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah), the first tune from Chic's self-titled debut album, was released in November 1977 and showed how easily the band adapted to the dance music that was popular in New York at the time. Still wary of the spotlight, Edwards and Rodgers Edwards and Rodgers chose to have models Valentine Monnier and Alva Chinn appear on the record cover instead of their faces. You might hear Chic's groovy disco wherever, from New York City's legendary Studio 54 to the tiniest bars in Asia.
